Research Institute (WRI)
was established in November 1975 by
Government of India with UNIDO and UNDP assistance under the
management of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, Tiruchirappalli,
India. WRI has been constantly interacting with world renowned
institutions for updating the knowledge base on latest
technologies and assimilating experience. |

Institute has been established to cater to the welding needs
of the Indian welding industries and for contributing to the
growth of welding and allied technologies. |

The Institute has the following recognitions
to its credit
- Authorised
by Indian Boiler Board (IBR) for training and certification
of welders
- Well
equipped laboratories accredited by National Accreditation
Board for Testing and Calibration laboratories (NABL),
New Delhi
- Centre
for Doctoral research recognized by Bharathidasan
University, Tamilnadu, India.

The Institute is manned by experts comprising of 8 doctorates and
7 post graduates trained in different countries in the field of
welding and allied areas and is fully equipped with the state of
the art facilities.
More than 7600 personnel have been trained and 2000 consultancy
services have been completed covering 120 organisations. The type
of industries served include
Heavy Engineering, Power, Petro-Chemical, Transport, Metal
Processing, Ship Building, Consumable & Welding equipment,
Electronics industries etc.
Till date,
technology transfer has been effected with the know-how for 12 products, around 18 Patents have been sealed, more than 50 Awards
have been won and 600 Technical papers have been published in
national and international journals. A reference book on
Industrial Welding Technology authored by WRI has been published
by Central Instructional Media Institute, (CIMI), Chennai for
practicing welding personnel. The important research works carried
out in the Institute are published in the Institute journal titled
"WRI
Journal". |

Equipment
Development – Design and fabrication of special purpose
custom-built welding machines, spraying & cladding systems, Feed
back controllers for resistance welding machines, Seam trackers for Arc
welding and In-situ metallographic Polishing kit.
Technology
Development -
Mechanisation & automation, Joining methods for all types of similar
& dissimilar materials and introduction of new processes &
techniques.

Support Services - Productivity and Quality Improvement
through Weld & Quality audit, Blue Prints on Plant Lay out,

& Reclamation –
Recommendation of repair procedure, Surveillance during repair and carry
out repair & reclamation work.
Welding
Procedure Specification - Assessment of weldability of new
materials establishment of welding procedures as per pressure vessel,
structural welding or applicable codes and evolve Welding Procedure
Specification.
Residual
Life Assessment of Power and Process Plants - Assessment of
damage and metallurgical condition by NDT & in-situ metallography
and recommend run – retire –repair solutions.
Engineering

& theoretical Stress Analysis, weld design recommendations,
Structural Integrity Analysis, Residual Stress Measurement, Prediction
and control of distortion.
